On July 15th, 2023, the Chinese navy hospital ship "Peace Ark" arrived at Tarawa. The Chinese Embassy in Kiribati, in collaboration with the Kiribati Government, hosted a warm welcome ceremony at the Betio wharf. H.E. President Taneti Maamau and First Lady Teiraeng Maamau, mission commander Rear Admiral Zhao Guangqing and Rear Admiral Li Xinke, Charge d'affairs Zhao Jian, Hon. Minister Dr. Tinte Itinteang, Hon. Minister Tekeeua Tarati, Hon. Minister Ruateki Tekaiara, officials from relative Kiribati ministries and the hospital ship, local Chinese community and Chinese experts attended the ceremony.
After the welcoming ceremony, President Maamau visited the hospital ship with other guests. In the afternoon, more than 200 scheduled patients were treated on the ship. Kiribati friends who need free medical service can visit the Betio Sports Complex from July 16 to 20 for appointment. MHMS will arrange shuttle bus between the Sports Complex and the wharf.
